CT Scanner
CT Scans are a more detailed x-ray. In a CT scan several beams are sent simultaneously from different angles. The X-rays from the beams are detected after they have passed through the body and their strength is measured. The computer processes the information and then produces a two dimensional image. Copper Queen Community Hospital has recently purchased a new multi-slice GE scanner. This scanner produces quality images while keeping the radiation dose low. To ensure pediatric patients are not being overexposed we are able to modify the dose given during their exams.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive procedure. Ultrasound uses sound waves that are beamed into the body causing return echoes that are recorded to produce structures beneath the skin. A clear gel will be applied to the area being examined. This will allow for the transducer to make good contact with the skin. As the transducer moves it will transmit images onto a monitor. One of the biggest benefits of having an ultrasound is that it does not use radiation to produce the image. There are no known harmful effects from Ultrasound. Copper Queen Community Hospital offers a wide variety of ultrasound exams. Our Ultrasound Technologist is ARDMS certified and has many years of experience.
Mammography
Copper Queen Community Hospital offers screening and diagnostic mammograms. During this exam a female technologist will compress the breast tissue to get a quality image. This might result in slight discomfort. Many patients ask the difference between the new digital mammograms and analog mammograms. It is a myth that digital mammograms have no compression. During a digital mammogram the breast tissue still has to be compress resulting in a slight discomfort.
DEXA
A DEXA scan is a non-invasive test that determines your bone health. This test involves minor exposure to radiation. Most doctors may recommend a DEXA scan if you meet any of the following: Postmenopausal women under the age of 65 who one or more risk factors for osteoporosis, women age 65 of older regardless of risk factors, postmenopausal women who have suffered fractures, women who are considering therapy for osteoporosis, or women who are or have been on hormone replacement/estrogen replacement therapy for long periods.
